Nineteen years ago, on July 26, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law. This landmark civil rights legislation removed barriers to participation in community life for people with disabilities. Whether the barriers are driven by policy, architectural design, communication or attitudes, the ADA is intended to guarantee people with disabilities equal opportunity and protections to which all U.S. citizens are entitled. House and Senate leaders have reached a tentative agreement on a billion dollar revenue package—again. The agreement is very similar to the one squashed by Governor Beverly Perdue last week because it included an income tax surcharge on all taxpayers. Read the rest of this entry
