Nineteen years ago, on July 26, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law. This landmark civil rights legislation removed barriers to participation in community life for people with disabilities. Whether the barriers are driven by policy, architectural design, communication or attitudes, the ADA is intended to guarantee people with disabilities equal opportunity and protections to which all U.S. citizens are entitled. These are rights which citizens without disabilities already enjoy.

The embarrassing debacle of paying the state’s bills with i.o.u.’s will come to an end — at least for a while. Though Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger had pledged not to “kick the can down the road,” the budget he intends to sign today relies on $8 billion in accounting and revenue gimmickry, virtually guaranteeing another fiscal crisis next year.

Perdue’s approval rating continues to plummet, with the latest survey showing that only 25 percent of voters approve of the job she’s doing, according to a new survey by Public Policy Polling, a Democratic-leaning polling firm.
